We've compiled a list some of some of the commonly asked questions about
colonic irrigation below. If you have any further questions or concerns, please
don't hesitate to
contact us.
Is the procedure painful?
Rarely. Sometimes during the procedure the muscles of the colon will contract
suddenly, expelling considerable liquid and waste into the rectum and out the
tubing. This contraction may feel like cramping or gas with pressure in the
rectum. Most of the process though is mild and gentle with a wonderful light,
empty and clean feeling afterwards.

Is colon therapy safe?
It is completely safe. You will be attended by a professionally trained and
skilled Colon Hydrotherapist that utilises safe Internationally recognised and
approved equipment. Sterile-disposable tubing and speculums are used with each
treatment to prevent any contamination. Highly filtered and sterilised water is
used and the water pressure is that of a normal pressure for a healthy bowel
movement.
How does a colon hydrotherapy treatment compare to an enema?
An enema only reaches the rectum and lower part of the colon, whereas with colon
hydrotherapy, the entire length of the colon (the large intestinal tract is
approximately1½ in length) is reached. Colonics is many more times effective.
Enemas can become psychologically addictive and can create dependence. Colon
hydrotherapy is not habit-forming.
What is the difference between colonics and colemas?
A colema is a more sophisticated enema and is mistakenly advertised as colon
hydrotherapy. Colemas use an "open" reservoir system and the speculum that
enters the body is "pencil thin." If the "self-administered" speculum is put in
improperly and only penetrates the body ½ inch to 1 inch then the process is
even less effective. The practitioner is not always present during the process.
Colon hydrotherapy accomplishes results that colemas simply can't.
Will colonics damage the normal intestinal flora?
Consider firstly that most people present with the ratio of good to bad
intestinal bacteria vastly in favour of bad bacteria, so cleansing the colon
through colon hydrotherapy will help to bring the acid-alkaline ratio back into
balance, allowing friendly bacteria to once again thrive, while inhibiting
disease causing organisms. We recommend an alkalising diet be followed during a
course of colonics to facilitate the cleansing/detox process and address
intestinal flora imbalance. For clients with more serious intestinal flora
issues, we recommend a good quality probiotic supplement be taken.
Does having a menstrual period at the time of a colon hydrotherapy have any
effect on the treatment?
It is usually a good time to receive colon hydrotherapy since the body is
already cleansing and the treatment will help relieve cramping associated with
menstruation. The menstrual flow does not interfere with the success of the
treatment. Flushing the colon will also reduce abdominal pressure associated
with menstrual cycles.
Is it embarrassing?
No. Your dignity is completely maintained and we pride ourselves on making your
therapy a pleasant experience. The session is conducted in a private room. You
are provided with a towel that you drape over your body. Draping is used to
maintain your modesty during the insertion of speculum and with our closed
system colon hydrotherapy no uncomfortable sounds or embarrassing odor will
exist during the treatment.
Will one colonic completely empty the colon?
Not often. Many of us have a substantial amount of impacted matter in our colon
that consists of hardened, rubbery or wallpaper like material. Secondly, there
is a learning process involved in receiving colonics. As you become more aware
of what is going on in your abdomen, and as your body learns how to allow the
cleansing experience, you are better able to enter into that process, and
therefore more material is released. One colonic will remove some of the
stagnant waste in the colon. The second and subsequent colonics will remove
more. For most people we recommend an initial course of around 3 sessions but
this obviously varies according to the clients state of intestinal health, their
health objectives and the advice of the therapist.
Will a colonic lavage upset the electrolyte balance?
Electrolytes are minerals in the body (mainly sodium and potassium salts) that
maintain the proper electrical charge and pH balance (acid and alkalinity
balance) in the various organs and tissues of the body. A major function of the
colon is to reabsorb the fluid and electrolytes from the unformed stool that is
moving into the colon from the small intestine. After the fluid and electrolytes
are reabsorbed and stool is formed, the colon moves the stool into the rectum
and out of the body. The majority of the material released during a colonic is
formed stool that has already had the fluid and electrolytes removed from it, so
the amount lost is very minimal and easily replaced by the body from the food
and fluid we ingest.
